Emergency Services/Operations
We at Squadron 64 are very proud of our Emergency Services record. Maintaining an effective and dynamic ES program in the Unit is an ongoing challenge. Since CAP is tasked with supporting not only Search and Rescue (SAR) and Disaster Relief missions, but also those involving counter-drug (CD) and border-integrity reconnaissance, we strive to train our members to be able to work in each of these areas. Although new adult members are not required to have had any previous training before joining CAP, they are encouraged to take part in as much of the available training as they can find the time for and frequently develop many new skills and abilities as a member of CAP. Our squadron has approximately 13 qualified pilots and about an equal number of observers. Several of these are also qualified for the CD operations that are routine in the Southern California area. Our adults and Cadets receive additional training in ground operations, radio communications, flight-line traffic control, first aid, CPR, blood-borne pathogens awareness, map and compass and many other useful skills. Squadron 64 hosts an annual Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX), in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team and other local agencies. We also host numerous training bivouacs and classes throughout the year, for other units as well as our own members. In the year 2003, our pilots logged over 500 hours of training and mission flight time. |
